SW trip, day 2

8a.m., readying for roading. Much more organized; funny how car travel requires completely different packing logistics than air travel. Oh, and recouped my $6 this morning after breakfast, cashed that ticket in. Gambling is one vice I don't have *phew* lol!

5:30pm, North Rim
There are no words for my first sight of the Grand Canyon, the name will have to suffice. I'm in a cabin at the Lodge with a small view of the canyon wall (one of the many) and minimal accoutrements, and quite happy. Reservations tomorrow night in the fancy dining room with sunset view, tonight the onsite deli served my needs quite nicely.

The drive here beggared my imagination. Huge layered mesas, wide meadows, more sky than I'm used to. I keep thinking about the native peoples who traveled these vast spaces. Joseph Campbell said one reason they descended to alcoholism and degradation was that their Spirits were deemed to have deserted them in the face of the white man's onslaught. I pictured also how covered wagons with brave adventurers had to negotiate those rocky heights and deep canyons. Truly makes one feel inadequate.

Tomorrow I have trails to hike, geology talks to attend, drives to scenic overlooks to navigate. One day may not suffice.
